The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash around 8:40 a.m. on I-43 south of Middle Road in Manitowoc Rapids.

A 51-year-old Manitowoc woman was driving an SUV northbound and lost control. The SUV went into the east ditch, overturned, and the girl was thrown from the vehicle, deputies said.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken via ambulance to Holy Family Memorial Medical Center for possible injuries. She was then arrested, and police are recommending a charge for homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and operating after revocation causing a death, the sheriff’s office said.

The woman is being held at the Manitowoc County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.
